Hair as a mirror of inner balance
According to Ayurveda, hair health and constitution are closely linked. Not only cosmetics, but also nutrition, lifestyle and mental balance are crucial for strong, healthy hair.
Your Dosha type plays a central role in this:
Vata hair: fine, dry, sensitive
- Typical problems: Dryness, hair breakage, hair loss
- What helps:
- Warm, nourishing oils such as sesame or almond oil
- Regular scalp massages
- Soups, root and leafy vegetables, regular intake of ghee and warm water
Pitta hair: strong but sensitive (especially when overheated)
- Typical problems: Hair loss, early graying
- What helps:
- Cooling care with coconut oil, aloe vera and gentle herbs such as brahmi and amalaki
- Avoid spicy, acidic and heating foods (e.g. alcohol, coffee, citrus fruits)
- Stress regulation and avoidance of heat
Kapha hair: full, shiny, but greasy quickly
- Typical problems: oily scalp, dandruff
- What helps:
- Regular cleansing with herbal powders such as shikakai or tulsi
- Activating scalp massages
- Reduction of heavy, oily foods
The power of oil massage
In Ayurveda, a daily or at least weekly scalp massage with warm oil (Shiroabhyanga) is one of the most effective hair care measures.
Traditionally, natural coconut oil is used as part of the Ayurvedic morning routine to calm the mind, nourish the scalp and strengthen the hair roots.
For those suffering from hair loss or exema on the scalp, medicated Ayurvedic oils with herbal additives (e.g. Bhringaraj, Brahmi, Amla or Neelibringadi Thailam) are recommended.
This application has a healing and regenerating effect, especially before going to bed.
Nutrition that nourishes from within
A balanced metabolism (Agni) is required for nutrients to reach the hair roots. An Ayurvedic beauty diet is based on:
- fresh, vital substance-rich food with vegetables, nuts, rice, mung beans and high-quality oils
- Warm, freshly cooked meals with ghee
- "Superfoods" for hair health:
- Amla & pomegranate - antioxidant, strengthening and blood-purifying
- Turmeric & coriander - anti-inflammatory and skin-friendly
- Almonds, pistachios & raisins - for shine and growth
You should avoid excessive consumption of:
- Coffee, alcohol, convenience foods
- Spicy or very acidic foods (especially for Pitta)
- Cold or dry bread
Rituals for beauty & self-care
Ayurveda emphasizes daily self-care as a ritual of love - not of correction. Rituals such as the morning oil massage (abhyanga), drinking hot water, dinner skipping or taking rasayanas (rejuvenating herbal elixirs) harmonize body and mind. This not only strengthens the self-image, but also gives the hair shine, fullness and expressiveness.

Rasayanas for hair & vitality
Rasayanas are Ayurvedic rejuvenating agents that build up ojas and strengthen the hair roots. Especially recommended:
- Chyavanprash - strengthens the immune system and ojas
- Bhringaraj - is considered the king herb for hair growth and hair loss
- Amla - has an antioxidant and regenerative effect on skin and hair
- Ashwagandha - harmonizes hormones, helps with stress-related hair loss
These remedies can be taken in consultation with an Ayurvedic therapist as a cure or on a permanent basis - tailored to the individual constitution and life circumstances.
The influence of the seasons on the hair
In Ayurveda, not only humans but also nature is viewed cyclically. The different seasons - called rites - have a direct influence on our organism. Autumn (Vata time) and late spring (Pitta time) are considered to be particularly critical for the hair.
In the Vata period (fall and winter), dryness increases - hair breaks faster and the scalp itches. Oil massages with warming oils and nourishing food are particularly important at this time.
The Pitta period (late spring and summer) is characterized by heat, which can lead to increased hair loss. Cooling herbs, coconut oil and a light diet with plenty of fluids have a soothing effect here.
Kapha times such as late winter and spring favor oily scalps and dandruff. Detoxification is now the order of the day - with detoxifying teas, exercise and drying hair care products such as neem or tulsi.
