Ojas - Ayurvedic elixir of life for immunity and vitality

Ojas - Ayurvedic elixir of life for immunity and vitality

In Ayurveda, ojas is the finest product of our metabolism - the essence that provides body, mind and soul with vitality. It is located in the heart, strengthens the immune system and gives us inner radiance. When Ojas is strong, we feel joie de vivre, resilience, calm and a youthful radiance. If Ojas is lacking, on the other hand, we feel tired, irritable, empty and more susceptible to illness.

In keeping with its meaning, ojas is also translated as "radiance" - in fact, it makes us shine on all levels - the eyes, the skin, the smile, the heart - everything radiates and glows with joie de vivre and vitality.

What about your ojas balance?

In Ayurveda, there are simple signs that tell you whether your ojas is in balance. Ask yourself these 6 questions:

  • Do you often feel tired, lacking in energy or burnt out?
  • Is your skin pale, your eyes dull or do you have dark circles under your eyes?
  • Are you plagued by listlessness, exhaustion or psychological complaints?
  • Are you constantly exhausted despite breaks or vacations?
  • Is your libido weak or has your desire to have children remained unfulfilled?
  • Do you experience feelings such as restlessness, irritability, sadness or inner emptiness particularly often?

If you answer yes to several questions, your Ojas balance is probably weakened - time to consciously strengthen it!

Ayurveda tips: How to nourish your ojas

1. Ojas-rich foods

Foods that are sweet, gentle, nourishing and slightly oily are considered particularly Ojas-promoting in Ayurveda. These include:

  • Milk & ghee - classic ojas boosters, best enjoyed warm.
  • Honey - in small quantities, preferably not heated.
  • Almonds, raisins, dates - sweet, nourishing and regenerating.
  • Mango & pomegranate - strengthen the body and brighten the mind.
  • Saffron, vanilla and cooked garlic - boost the ojas-building cell metabolism
  • Amla (Indian gooseberry) - particularly rich in vital substances.

Tip: Chyavanprash is made from amla according to a traditional recipe - a herbal jam with more than 40 ingredients that strengthens the body and mind. In Ayurveda, one teaspoon a day is considered the easiest way to build up ojas.

2. Recipes for more ojas in everyday life

"Good morning - good day - milk" - the Ayurvedic start to the day:

  • 1 cup of milk (or almond milk as a plant-based alternative)
  • 1 tbsp chyavanprash

Warm the milk slightly, stir in Chyavanprash and drink slowly.
This combination strengthens the immune system, provides gentle energy for the day and builds up Ojas sustainably.

"Ashvagandha good night milk"
The ideal evening routine for restful sleep and building up Ojas:

  • 1 cup of milk
  • 3 g ashvagandha
  • 1 g cardamom
  • 3 g Brahmi
  • 1 tsp poppy seeds
  • 1 tsp honey (add after cooking)

Bring everything except the honey to the boil, drink warm and enjoy before going to bed.

3. Rituals for relaxation and radiance

Stress is considered the biggest robber of ojas. Ayurveda therefore recommends loving rituals that nourish you:

  • Oil massages (Abhyanga) - warm, relax and give you a sense of security.
  • Beauty baths in the evenings with special oils - have a dosha-balancing effect, reduce stress and make you glow inside (optimum temperature: 35 °C - 39 °C).

You can combine the two rituals perfectly by treating yourself to a gentle oil massage before the bath. To do this, apply oil from head to toe and massage your body gently. Leave the oil on your skin and add some sea salt or crystal salt to the bath. There you can gently massage the oil and salt off your skin. After about 10 minutes, slowly get out of the bath.

Ojas is the basis for health, vitality and resilience - and each of us can nurture this treasure.
