About the Ayurvedic diet

A look behind the scenes of Ayurvedic cuisine: In this interview, you will find out how the Ayurvedic diet harmonizes body, mind and everyday life - practical, inspiring and surprisingly suitable for everyday use.

Kerstin, what characterizes the Ayurvedic diet?

Ayurveda, the traditional medicine of India, has comprehensive nutritional teachings aimed at strengthening physical and mental balance. Many people associate Ayurveda with an Indian vegetarian diet. However, this view is too one-sided. In Ayurveda, we pay attention to fresh, regional and seasonal food.
The special thing about Ayurvedic nutrition is the individual approach: depending on your personal constitution, there are many healthy tips for choosing, preparing and generally eating the right type of food.

Ayurvedic nutrition distinguishes between different nutritional types. Why can't everyone eat the same thing?

Yes, in Ayurveda we distinguish between three constitutional types (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) and their mixed forms, which are characterized by individual characteristics in physique, characteristics and digestion. For example, if we have a lot of Vata (airy type), we are slim, freeze easily and tend to be nervous and have a sensitive digestion with flatulence and constipation. People with a lot of Pitta (fiery type) are athletic, strong-willed and have a fast metabolism with a tendency to hyperacidity or diarrhea and always have a strong appetite. If, on the other hand, Kapha predominates (earthy type), this can be recognized by the strong physique with a tendency to gain weight, respiratory problems and a calm, balanced disposition.
Depending on which constitutional imprint dominates, the daily diet can be individually adapted to the type-specific needs: Ayurveda recommends warm and cooked dishes to balance Vata, while the hot-tempered Pitta type needs more raw food and alkaline root and leafy vegetables. Stimulating spices and only small meals have a beneficial effect on the sluggish Kapha metabolism - especially in the morning and evening.

How are these nutritional types determined?

To determine your type, you can fill out a questionnaire or have yourself personally analyzed and advised. Every Ayurveda book contains a detailed constitution test and there are some available to download from the Internet. I myself have also developed an easy-to-answer questionnaire with balancing recommendations.

Is the Ayuvedic diet also suitable for children?

Yes, definitely! I myself have spoiled my three children with Ayurvedic nutrition in a healthy way. Knowing what is good for your own child and how we can help with simple home remedies for colds, stomach ache, insomnia or digestive problems is a great relief. And the great thing about Ayurveda is that the diet is not dogmatic, but versatile, delicious and quick to prepare.

Do you also differentiate between different constitutional types in children?

Of course, we look at the child's individual constitution and needs. However, Ayurvedic pediatrics (Bala Roga) also provides many general tips for growth and development from infants to teenagers. These health recommendations then apply to all types.

What influence can this special form of nutrition have on children?

Ayurvedic child nutrition attaches great importance to regular meals. In the evening, something warm - such as soup - should always be eaten in a relaxed atmosphere. And spices can help to digest food better. All this strengthens the immune system and supports the child's development.
